Day 39 - Ushuaia to Rio Gallegos

We made the decision to skip Rio Grande and head for the next town on the route, Rio Gallegos, north of the Magellan Straits in Patagonia.

We left at 6am. We crossed the border into Chile at San Sebastian. The gravel became quite bad and the lorries were travelling very fast throwing up lots of stones and dust. Our windscreen was hit by a big stone from a lorry, making a small hole although not all the way through. Then, we were hit again by the second of two fast trucks coming towards us and this time it resulted in three or four large circular cracks at the top of the windscreen.

As we approached the ferry to cross the Magellan Straits Colin Heathcote overtook us, in a cloud of dust and stones! We caught up with him and Paul Markland at the ferry.

We saw only one dolphin on the ferry back across the Straits of Magellan. We stopped for lunch on the North side and continued on to our destination, by now fed up with gravel - good, fast or otherwise. Paul and Charles were having problems with their car. We stayed at the Aparthotel Costa Rio which was quite good.

We had a roomy apartment with a kitchen. I watched "Viva Maria" in French with Spanish sub-titles while Tim went to have the car cleaned. We had supper downstairs in the bar - perfectly adequate. On to Comodoro Rivadavia tomorrow.

Distance - 375 miles
